Our Mission Statement

It is our dream that children who pass through Unity School will, through play and discovery, be encouraged to reach their unique and individual potentials, take with them the wisdom to live a healthful life, always opt for a peaceful way to solve their problems and weave who they are and the skills they have learned here into positive solutions for our community and our planet.      

Who We are

Unity is a non-profit school serving families in Lane County for over 50 years. We started as a small cooperative preschool in 1974 and have settled permanently at 580 N. Garden Way, an old farmhouse built in 1928, sitting on almost an acre of land in the heart of the city. The program that developed over the years has focused on peaceful, child-centered education and care in a beautiful natural setting. We use HighScope, an inclusive, research-based, active, participatory, play-based curriculum that targets the eight categories of learning.

Learn & Play

At Unity School, children learn and play in various settings: in their welcoming classroom, where they engage in open-ended activities for hands-on learning. In a wonderful play yard, which features large old trees, a grapevine-shaded sandbox, a ‘wild’ hill among the shrubs, and plenty of space to run, play, and imagine. In the big organic garden, where they learn how to plant and harvest, or work in small group doing creative lessons centered around plants and the outdoor elements.

 

We go outside come rain or shine, but on days when the weather isn't permitting out door play, they have the opportunity to go into the big barn to jump, run, and release their energy.

 

The children also take turns caring for the many pets at Unity.

 

Children learn through every moment of their day.
