Part-Day Preschool Room

Ages 3.5-5

We are excited to offer a part-day preschool class! This class will consist of children aged 3.5 to 5 years. It will share a classroom with our after-school group, meaning this part-day class will be held in the morning, from 8:30 to 12:30, allowing the classroom to be available for our after-school group in the afternoon. Morning drop-off will be flexible. We open at 7 a.m., so if you need childcare before 8:30, we can accommodate you!

This class also differs from our other preschool programs because it follows the 4J curriculum and closure schedule, allowing the after-school group to use the room on their ‘No School’ days. Due to these days off, the tuition rates will be lower than those of our other preschool classes. We will provide you with a calendar of days off once you enroll, so you can make your plans accordingly.

Our child-centered HighScope curriculum will be used in this class just like in the other preschool classes. Another great feature of this class is the door that opens from the classroom to our beautiful organic garden, providing more gardening opportunities for this group than for the others. The classroom is also the largest in our school, with a capacity of 24 children, but this class will have no more than 14 children, giving the kids plenty of space!

Toddler/Preschool/Pre-K

Ages 2-5

Come and play! The Unity School curriculum and daily routine are based on the High-Scope curriculum, a child-centered program that uses a hands-on approach to develop cognitive, social, and physical skills.

Varied and fun activity centers offer opportunities for play, exploration, and learning at a relaxed pace. More structured, teacher-directed circles and small group times introduce new skills and develop the ability to work in groups. Classes for two-, three-, and four-year-olds encourage plenty of social learning, while mixed-group opportunities provide a chance to stretch and grow.

Each classroom develops a weekly or biweekly focus by brainstorming together and creating ‘concept webs’ that branch off from the previous week’s focus. These webs often explore the world around us—from our own neighborhood to peoples and cultures worldwide; folk tales or dinosaurs; recycling and ecology; gardening or the solar system—wherever a child’s curiosity leads us!

After and Before Care

K-4th

Unity School offers recreational programs before and after school for elementary-age children from kindergarten through fourth grade. Transportation is available by bus to and from several nearby schools (please call for availability). Full-day programs are available during school holidays and summer vacations for children up to age 10.

Located in our largest classroom, our school-age care program (known as the Otter Class) provides opportunities for children to build community among their multi-aged peers and be welcomed with warmth and friendship after a full day of school.

We use the HighScope curriculum in this class as well, focusing on “active, participatory learning." When children arrive in the Otter classroom, they have time to work on homework with the assistance of the teachers. During group time, they play games, listen to stories, and engage in social problem-solving as a group. They have a snack and then get down to play—whether building with Legos, creating artwork, crafting, or engaging in dramatic play. The children unwind after a day of structure and schedules.

We provide an enriching and stimulating environment that is based on respect for nature, peaceful conflict resolution, and community service. Frequent field trips on no-school days reflect our efforts to model social responsibility and skills in public spaces as a group.

Otters have hiking excursions and picnics at parks and playgrounds. Our otters also have daily opportunities to work in our garden by planting seeds, caring for the plants, harvesting, and preparing food with the fruits and vegetables they grow!

Summer Programs

Children need unstructured time in nature to immerse themselves in play. At Unity School, we provide outdoor summer activities, and our vast play yard serves as a classroom.

We spend nearly all our time exploring outside, interacting with mixed-age groups as children from all the classrooms play together in the yard throughout the day. We bring the classroom outside, offering sensory, dramatic play, science, and art activities in our large, shaded play yard.

We also furnish toys and props that promote large motor movement and cooperative play. We take field trips and do lots of gardening, too! We celebrate the beginning and end of summer with a family picnic and an ice cream social.

Meals

Unity serves breakfast, two snacks, and lunch daily. Weekly menus are posted on the bulletin board by the front office. Please check the daily schedule in your child’s classroom for mealtimes. Our food program is provided at no additional charge to parents. We provide high-quality meals using beans, cheese, eggs, and nuts as protein sources. We serve low-sugar, homemade snacks, whole grain breads, and fresh vegetables and fruits as often as possible. As part of our health curriculum, each class learns about healthy foods, which is reinforced daily during meal times.

We receive funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assist with our meal program costs. This program also supports meal programs in public schools. Our meals must meet USDA standards for the types and quantities of foods included. We expect all children to participate in the program. We request that you do not send a box lunch, snacks, or other foods with your child.

We enjoy family-style dining, allowing children to help themselves from serving bowls. The staff joins the children at the table, demonstrating healthy eating habits by consuming all the nutritious food provided and encouraging the children to follow suit. Seconds are offered. The children clear their own dishes into the bus tubs, scraping leftovers for compost and disposing of paper products in the waste basket.
